Sweet Safety

Despite what my posts would imply, I've been out of town for a week (Guy's been manning the blogger dashboard). I returned Saturday morning to rain and mist and it was like I'd never left Hawaii! Crazy.

Boy and Girl gave us the first night to ourselves (thank heavens, since I was mostly comatose, having flown all night and not slept and being completely confused as to whether daylight meant sleep time or awake time). But of course they wanted to come over to get their presents and watch Fraggle Rock (which still totally rules!), so we had them Sunday.

So, around 8:30 Sunday night, I'm lying on the couch trying really hard not to nod off while assisting Boy with his book of Origami For Keiki. (Means kids, you illiterate doofuses). Guy is over at the piano playing some kind of weird New Age music with Girl--and believe me, he got mocked for that--and it's all very peaceful and normal.

But slowly, I begin to notice a melody coming from the living room--and the kind of melody you'd hear on the radio, with an adult voice instead of that of a four-year-old. And the lyrics. . .

It's so nice to be at home
So happy, so safe
It's so good to be at home

I wish everybody had the same birthday
And that it was every day
And there were presents and presents and presents

It's so good to be at home.

It was beautiful. Occasionally, Guy would chime in with a backup, or Boy would, or I would, but Girl was leading the show. Boy jumped up during a piano solo and picked up Girl (which he's normally not allowed to do) and hugged her and twirled with her, and suddenly I was crying, and so was Guy.

What four year old sings about being safe? And what a Joan Osborne-y theme! Guy, baby--we're doing something right.

It's so good to be at home--sweetie, I'm right there with you.

Song:
Feels Like Home, Trio

Quote:
Lorelai: Schooch down now and go to sleep. [she moves Rory's armchair]
Rory: What are you doing?
Lorelai: Nothing, just a little feng shui, go to sleep.
Rory: Mom, you don't have to sleep in here tonight.
Lorelai: I know, I just think the chair looks nice here.
Rory: And what's the blanket for?
Lorelai: In case the chair gets cold.
Rory: And the pillow?
Lorelai: To keep the blanket company.
Rory: Uh-huh.
Lorelai: Okay, everything's in its place. Chair seems warm, blanket seems happy, just one thing missing... oh yeah. [sits down in chair] Goodnight.
Rory: Freak of sideshow proportions.
Lorelai: I love you, too.
Rory: Mom?
Lorelai: Hmm?
Rory: I'm sorry.
Lorelai: Shh, the chair is trying to sleep.

Welcome back, Cordy. You were severely missed. And thanks for the recap of last night--it was special.
